During Tokyo's beautiful autumn evenings, the entire Shimokitazawa neighborhood becomes a stage for art, music, theater, food, workshops, and more.

Museum of the Moon

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.
Over its lifetime, the Museum of the Moon will be presented in a number of different ways both indoors and outdoors. As it travels from place to place, it will gather new musical compositions and an ongoing collection of personal responses, stories and mythologies, as well as highlighting the latest moon science.
Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, writers and musicians the world over. Different cultures around the world have their own historical, cultural and religious relationships to the moon. In more recent history, the moon has been a site for ongoing scientific exploration.
Museum of the Moon allows us to observe and contemplate cultural similarities and differences around the world, and consider the latest moon science. Depending on where the artwork is presented, its meaning and interpretation will shift.
A Thousand Faces of the Moon

Although there is only one moon, the side visible to us—and the patterns we see—differ depending on the region. Beyond that, I felt that the moon might take on a different significance depending on the viewer's circumstances, environment, or timing; this inspired me to create a wide variety of moons.

Additionally, the moon signage made with reflective material emits a special glow when viewed from the angle where light is directed at it. It is only natural for people to hold diverse perceptions and values regarding a single object, and I hope this project prompts the question: how do we enjoy that situation? During the exhibition, I will also host a silkscreen printing workshop featuring moon motifs. Silkscreening allows participants to take their own moon home, and I believe the process pairs well with the character of this neighborhood, known for its vintage clothing shops.
The Big Flat Now

Emoji emerged from Japanese mobile-phone culture in 1999 and have since become a universal visual language. The “Face with Tears of Joy,” once the world’s most widely used emoji, was named Oxford Dictionaries’ Word of the Year in 2015 and has repeatedly appeared in Matsuda’s work.
Yet the way emoji are used continues to shift across generations, and in 2025 the “Loudly Crying Face” became the most widely used emoji on social media. Today, it conveys not only sadness, but also feelings such as “laughing too hard,” “I can’t,” and “this is too precious.”
This exhibition premieres a new “Loudly Crying Face” that reflects this shift. By bringing the multiple emotions layered within a single symbol out into the nighttime city, the work reconsiders the boundaries between digital and physical, information and matter, emotion and the body. Just as people once looked up at the same moon, we now look at the same emoji across national borders.
And, recalling how the moon and the night have long been associated with revealing another side of ourselves, the “Devil” emoji also makes its first appearance as another face of Shimokitazawa—a neighborhood whose character changes between day and night.
